R.I.P. Bad news this morning my friend & fellow masquerader died last night...

He was shot and killed in the Virgin Islands last night.

And I was in shock...didn't feel real...

Til I wrote on his wall and realized even if I reach 100 years old he is NEVER going to answer.

Then the tears came.

He was one of the friends that was going to play mas with YUMA in TNT with me. It reminded me of the song that says something like enjoy yourself in the mas cause you never know, it could be your last.

The main point of tnt/playing mas aside from a break from U.S. life was a way to reunite with old friends...and now he won't be there.

He is one of THE calmest most relaxed people I know I can't even understand who would do that to him, or why...

*wipes tears* I didn't think I would cry. Haven't seen him in years. Something about writing on the fb wall made reality strike.

The news (once I realized it was REAL and not some sick joke), made me think of Rupee's song... "enjoy yourself in the mas, cause you never know...it could be your last"...

I've been the organizing force behind the 6 of us who linked to go to Trinidad Carnival 2k11 and thinking all along that from my freshman English class we shared where you would tease me to death about the professor showing his attraction to me in front the whole class to our CSA days "liming" on the set in the "CSA spot" and at CSA events, we've been in touch for over 10 years now and Trinidad was going to be a great way to reconnect with you and my other friends old and new in our post-FAMU phase of life.

I can't stop thinking I have your registration receipt for YUMA mas band, I have probably the only other copy of your flight itinerary besides the one probably stuck in your email, and should get to your mother so she can get a refund...and I even have your housing deposit that you wired to me, that I have to try and get to your mom as well...it's all so FINAL...you've been such a calming influence and a voice of experience (and source of humor) as I tried to get the fine details of this trip organized so we could have a GREAT time once we reach...and now you won't...

If not for you the other two guys might not even have been part of our group and we will have to make sure, God willing, that we take a li'l wine and a li'l drink and share a li'l cool vibes in Trini in memory of the cool young man, ever calm and ever with the bright bright smile, that you ARE, not were... now I know why we Jamaicans end all future plans with "God willing." You might be Muslim but I know is the same one God we worship so as a Christian I pray you are in the right place now and I will never forget you. Rest in peace Aquil.
